How Is GPA Calculated?
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours. Quality points for each course equal the grade value times credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12.0 quality points.
GPA Scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Some schools use a 4.3 scale where A+ = 4.3.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds extra points for AP, Honors, or IB classes — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB. Use the Raise My GPA planner to see what grades you need to hit your target.
A 3.0 is the minimum for most graduate programs. Competitive programs look for 3.5+, and top-tier schools expect 3.7+.
No. P/NP, Withdrawal, and Incomplete grades are excluded. Only letter-graded courses count.
It depends on your total credits. An F hurts much more with 30 credits than with 90. Use the calculator to see the exact impact.
Most schools require a 3.5 semester GPA, though some require 3.6 or 3.7.
Yes, but each new grade has less impact the more credits you have. Use the Raise My GPA planner to see what you need.
Unweighted uses the standard 4.0 scale. Weighted adds extra points for AP/Honors/IB classes and can exceed 4.0.
