How Is Your Final Exam Grade Calculated?
Your course grade is a weighted average: Final Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight) + Exam Score × Exam Weight. Rearranging to find the minimum exam score:
Required Score = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) / Weight
Example: current 85%, target 90%, exam worth 30% → (90 − 85 × 0.70) / 0.30 = 101.7% — not achievable, so lower your target.
If the required score is above 100%, your target grade isn't reachable. If it's below your current average, you have a comfortable cushion. Try different targets to find what's realistic.
Required Score = (Target − Current × (1 − Exam Weight)) / Exam Weight. This gives the minimum score needed on your final to reach your target.
Your target grade isn't achievable. Lower your target or check for extra credit.
